Pete and I attended a birthday party yesterday for a 13 year old. His parents Jim and Mary Seigler own a deer farm here in Wisconsin. It was the first time ever in my life I went to a birthday party for children and the highlight of the day wasn’t opening gifts or blowing out candles, but trap shooting!

As I was taking pictures of Cory and his friends shooting at the clay pigeons I looked down to my right and what a beautiful site! There to my right was Cory’s 5 year old brother Joseph with the coolest gun; check out the scope he made by himself!

I guess I need to start saving toilet paper rolls and go into a joint business venture with Joseph. We could call the scope "pot-shot". This little guy will be somebody one day! Thanks for sharing this with us Brigid.

Hey Scott,

I tried my best to take that little darling home with me, but didn't have any luck. His dad has a pretty tight hand shake, a sparkle in his eye, and probably wears size 14 shoes; I don't think I'd want to mess with him.

Have you ever seen these guns called Chipmunks? They are little 22's made just for a guy this size. We have them for our grandchildren. Shooting clay pigeons is something we do often with them.

I have never heard of guns called chipmunks, but will look into it for our charity. I would like next July to set something up at our WI event where we add clay pigeons in with our target practicing at our bow and gun shoot. I think the kids would love it!!

Thanks for the advice!

Brigid- Have you seen the Cricket 22’s that come in all colors even pink? What boy would have a pink gun? Well my granddaughter loves hers! She, her two brothers, mom and dad spent the weekend at deer camp where Jaydon came to visit. I hope the deer are doing better up north because down here we are losing lots of animals. I have lost almost all my breeder herd. I only have 4 of them left and 3 of them are sick. The Wide Load buck (Super Stretch son) that Jaydon saw last year is the latest to get sick. I have tried everything that has been suggested and haven’t saved an animal yet. In the wild several are being found but DNR is not reporting them. Guess that is bad for business.

Bob,

I have heard many horror stories that are similar to yours around the southern part of the country. It's just a sickening thing to have happen to anybody who genuinely cares about deer the way deer farmers care about their herd! Deer are not just a hobby for them that roll around during the hunting and scouting preseason, deer are a way of life for most breeders that I have ever met and losing any animals is a bitter pill to swallow.

A long time hunt donor for our charity has lost over 60 head this year. I can only imagine the feeling of looking out into a sparsely populated pen that was at one time full of high quality specimens of one of North America’s greatest trophy animals. My prayers are with you and all who are suffering through the same fate! If there is anything we can do for you or any others in the same situation please let me know.

On a brighter note, the little boy with the "Pot-shot" scope has a father that is donating a red deer stag to a little girl from Alabama with a life threatening illness. She can only eat venison as a protein source and was given the opportunity to harvest one of his animals for the meat! God bless you all!
