One of our youth bear hunters has cancer and his life has been very problematical. Two weeks ago while in the hospital struggling to cope with the pain and suffering, he thought about the loss of his grandfather to cancer, and was now giving up the will to live. I spoke to his mom and you could tell she was carrying a heavy load on her shoulders! The bear guide called me also to discuss the youth’s situation. You could tell by his voice he was very concerned. He told me he saw black bear all over the property and there was a big bear just waiting for him. This hunt meant as much to the guide as it did at one time for this critically-ill youth hunter. I spoke to his mother on the phone and I felt in my heart that I needed to help him somehow. I had never spoken to him, but this youth having a critical illness, I had a feeling deep in my heart what might spark an interest for him to fight to live and attend his bear hunt! I passed the idea by the young man’s guide and he was as enthused as I was. I put together a packet of all the newspaper and magazine articles and a DVD I had made of the 2006 bear hunt. The guide put together some pictures of the bear he was seeing; we sent it all to his mother. A couple days passed and I called his mom at the hospital and she told me her son had read all the articles and watched the DVD. She told me he said, “I’m going bear hunting!” Yesterday this very special young man harvested a dandy of a bear! When he and is guide called me and told me the story I was ecstatic! Then I spoke to his mom and she was on cloud nine. When I hung up the phone, it took me a while to gain my composure. I never once doubted the power of God, but I was realizing the gift he gave this young man was not only for him, but to be shared by everyone involved. The best things in life are free! God bless you all. Brigid O’Donoghue |
