Long before the robins have returned, USSA marked the beginning of spring by organizing a turkey hunt for 16 challenged youth. Cancer, Leukemia, Spinal Bifida, and brittle bone disease are just some of the issues that affect the daily lives of these special youth. The event was held near two Wisconsin locations; Junction City and Caroline, WI. Although the weekend was pleasant and sunny, there was still significant snow on the ground and travel to and from the field was at times difficult. With the help of some veteran turkey hunters, these youth were able to harvest some real nice birds. The largest gobbler weighed in at 22.5 lbs and in all six turkeys were taken. Casey’s bird weighed in at 22.5 lbs with a beard around 10 inches. Austin’s bird was 21 ¾ lbs and 9.25 inch beard. Caleb’s turkey weighed just less than 18 lbs with an 8.75 beard. Mitchells weighed in 22lbs and had a 10 ½ inch beard. Daniel and Skylar turkeys weighed 21 lbs each. The chance for many of these youth to experience the onset of spring and the new life it brings, is irreplaceable, and a true blessing. I would like to thank all the guides, sponsors and taxidermists that helped put on such a rewarding event. A special thank you to Mike Tuss, Tom Mijal, John Haydock and Ron Johnson for their outstanding dedication in this hunt! May God bless you all. Brigid O’Donoghue |
