GETTING READY - Brittany Zebrasky of Hartland and her family will head to Minnesota for a hunting trip courtesy of Under Broken Wings, a charitable organization that takes children on such trips. Jim Hayett of Merton, a member of the organization, will accompany the family. Brittany, who has brain cancer, recently took some practice shots. Brittany Zebrasky, 13, will go on a hunting trip to Minnesota. On the surface, there is little unusual about that. Except that Brittany was diagnosed with brain cancer eight years ago. "She's very excited about this," said her mother, Tiffany. Like mother, like daughter - Brittany has a keen interest in hunting, and so do her father and brother. "Yes, we're a big hunting family," Tiffany said. Tiffany said her daughter is doing all right and undergoing chemotherapy. She has also been diagnosed with other tumors. The Zebrasky family will be in Minnesota Oct. 7-11, thanks to an organization called Under Broken Wings. Jim Hayett of Merton is a member of the organization, which pays for hunting trips for children who want to hunt and fish. This year it was Hayett's turn to find a deserving child, and he was given Brittany's name. "She's a very positive, outgoing girl," said Hayett, who said Brittany is mature beyond her years. "She's 13 going on 25." About three years ago, the board of Under Broken Wings decided to offer a hunting trip to children who have severe illnesses. The charity, he said, is like the Make-A-Wish Foundation, but offers trips for hunting and fishing, which the more well-known Make-A-Wish organization does not. In the first year, the group took a Minnesota boy with cerebral palsy. With some assistance from Hayett in holding the gun, the boy was able to shoot a bird. Last year, a child from Anchorage, Alaska, who has Down syndrome, was taken on the trip. "It's just the time of their lives," he said. The Under Broken Wings organization is a subgroup of the Ruffed Grouse Society, which held its annual fundraiser banquet recently at The Red Circle Inn in Nashotah. Enough money was raised to send Brittany on her trip. |
