At one of our USSA quarterly meetings, Scott Kowalski (USSA) suggested I speak on a national radio program that aired throughout the trucking industry. He felt it may help open some new doors in order to spread the word about the USSA charity. After speaking on the radio program I received a phone call from a man who owned a trucking company in MN. The owner’s name was Kevin, and he explained to me how he thought that the USSA was doing great things, and would love to put USSA’s logo on his fleet of trucks. He was a single father and had two daughters who also enjoyed the sport of hunting. About a month later, a single mother from MN called me to see if her son, who was critically-ill would qualify for a deer hunt. Her name was Michelle, and she told me that her son, Josh, had never shot a gun before and she really didn’t know anyone in her area that could teach him. I took some time and located Michelle’s home on the map. I told Michelle I knew someone 15 miles away that could possibly help her son out. I called Kevin and explained the situation, and it wasn’t long after that he and Josh were out target practicing. In the mean time, I had recently received an email from Steve Grahm, with Texas Trophy Hunter Magazine telling me that Douglas Schnitzer (Vice President of the TCU TTHA Chapter in Fort Worth, TX) had purchased a hunt at Triple Cross Ranch to be donated to USSA. I contacted Richard Harbin, owner of Triple Cross Ranch and told him about Josh. A special hunt for Josh was planned, and all we needed were two plane tickets. We were fortunate that our charity (USSA) had recently received a letter and check from a lady who had lost her husband. She wrote in the letter that she wanted his memorial fund to help grant a hunting wish to a special child. We had the perfect opportunity to used her donation to purchase the plane tickets for Josh. A series of events finally turned Josh’s dream into a reality, and during his trip Josh called me from Texas to tell me he shot a bobcat. He said that he and mom were going to stay and extra day to get a 16 point whitetail he had seen. I told him I knew he could do it and I would keep him in my prayers. The following day Josh called from the Triple Cross Ranch, and I could tell he was one really happy young man. He got the giant whitetail most of us only dream about. It’s the caring people willing to be involved and the connections they make that create the real opportunities for children such as Josh. The smile in his voice over the phone was confirmation of how meaningful it is to make a great day in the life of a child. God bless you! Brigid O'Donoghue | ||

I can't help thinking what I would do or how I would feel (as a parent) in a similar situation. I can't make it to the bottom of you posts Brigid before I have to wipe a blurry eye or two. Great work and thanks for sharing with all of us. Many blessings in return. | ||

I can not begin to tell you what an amazing experience this has been for Josh (and myself). Josh has always had this huge spirit, but with all of the heart problems he isn't able to keep up with kids his own age in some ways. Hunting is something Josh never thought he would be able to do since he isn't able to walk very far, or take the cold outside in the winter. With the help of Brigid and everyone else involved he has been able to do something very special to him that he will never forget. We have been blessed with many new friends from this trip and hope to meet many more in the future. Brigid, we thank you and send tons of love your way. Michelle and Josh. | ||
